WAYFINDING in the NEWS - Campus Wayfinding Topic of Public Input Session

  • Campus Wayfinding

At Pocket Maps, we follow many topics relative to personal navigation, so we were interested in a recent article entitled. Campus wayfinding is the topic of the public input session. We have always believed that the "path of least resistance" is the best way to get from point A to point B, so we wanted to see what this was all about!

Here is a link to the Article Itself that describes how Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is investigating the development of a "wayfinding master plan." The University hired Cloud Gershan Associates, a consulting firm that has been "Shaping the Visitor Experience" for over 25 years.

The company has done similar projects for Arizona State, Ohio State, George Washington University, and others. According to The Wayfinding Handbook, Wayfinding is the "process that encompasses both the experience of choosing a path within a built environment and the set of design elements that aid in such a decision."

At Pocket Maps, we take a more straightforward approach. We think of Wayfinding as "charting the course of least resistance."

Anyone who ever went to college north of the Mason Dixon Line knows that the sidewalks should be built diagonally in the manner that students take between buildings rather than in square patterns that look nice on paper.

One of our customers told us about going to college in North Dakota, where the frigid air freezes your nostrils shut! You don't take the planned route; you take the path of least resistance! Sidewalks were rebuilt to cover the paths that students created.

Being in Savannah, Ga., we don't get that, but we do get being outside when the heat will melt you before you can get to your next class. The path of least resistance with a pocket map to the rescue again!

Pocket Maps are designed to eliminate the wandering and misdirection inherent with being in unfamiliar surroundings. We get your visitors to their destination on time and with the least amount of hassle.

Please contact us to learn more about Pocket Maps' role in your campus, business, city, or other wayfinding master plan. We are Pocket Maps, and we "Get You There in a Straight Line."
