Frequently Asked Questions

General

What’s the difference between the fold types?

Single-Row

Our custom printed PocketMaps and leaflets fold out into a single vertical or horizontal row of pages. The single row is an accordion or sometimes called a concertina fold, and it's folded laterally across into a small shape. It consists of one row of folded pages, secured between two cover pages or one wrap-around cover with a spine, like a booklet. The Single-row is ideal for product information inserts, events or onsite guides, marketing handouts & voucher booklets.

Double-Row

It consists of 2 rows of folded pages, secured between two cover pages as standard, or one wrap-around cover with a spine – like a booklet. The Double row offers two rows of pages, and it folds vertically and horizontally to fit into its compact shape. The Double row provides two rows of pages, and it folds vertically and horizontally to fit into its compact form. Sometimes referred to as 'K fold' cards or 'Z fold leaflets.

Unlike the single row, which opens up in one movement like an accordion to reveal one row of pages, our double opens up like a matchbook and then unfolds like an accordion. It offers you double the amount of space as a single row.

The Double-Row PocketMaps often are used for portable information booklets that require more detail – like handbooks, small guidebooks, and promotional literature. The two rows are on top of each other, then folded like an accordion and then in half. They are secured between two single cover pages or between two 'bookend' cover pages.

Triple-Row

The Triple-row, sometimes called Z fold cards, reveals three rows of pages. All are secured between two cover pages (standard) or one wrap-around cover with a spine (like a book). The triple row provides three rows of carriers, and it folds twice in one direction and then pleats folded to fit into its small and compact shape.

Individual pages are folded into rows, then vertically down the creases between each page to compress all panels into the size of one singular board. This kind of fold offers you the most printed area.

The Triple-row format is the most popular specialty fold we make. Due to their small size, they are perfect for bike maps and ski and trail maps. Often printed as maps for theme parks, municipalities, tourism, and transit and commonly used for company mission statements and promotional-related print like expos and trade-show marketing.

Prepress & Design

What is my order number?

You can find your order number in the table on the Order Summary page after you have created an order. Please provide it to your designer to add it into the production label of your print files. This is also sometimes referred to as your job number.

Do your design templates work in Adobe Illustrator?

Yes. Our PDF templates can be opened in Adobe Illustrator. They are treated as an import, which means you will be presented with a few options when importing. Depending on the version of Illustrator you're using, you will see different variations. We'll cover the main contents you need to be aware of in order to select the appropriate options.

1) Pages – If you are given the option to select All pages at once, do so. This will give you the entire template file at once. Otherwise, if you are only able to import 1 page at a time, you may need to open the template multiple times (once per page) and then copy over all parts of the template into a single AI file.

2) Import PDF pages as links – This step is optional. But if you're given this option (will appear as a checkbox), we recommend selecting it. This will preserve our fonts and font styling so that the rendered template appears as intended. It will provide the most legible experience. However, you will not be able to interact with individual layers within our template. If you change your mind after importing, you can embed the template pages. If you are not given this option open opening the template, Illustrator will most likely convert fonts to outlines instead to preserve appearance.

3) Color profile Most importantly, if you are prompted to select CMYK or RGB, select CMYK. On any print file, CMYK will provide the best color for printing. RGB is intended only for viewing designs on digital screens.

Can you make PocketMaps at a custom size?

Yes. We can customize the size of our PocketMaps to your exact specifications. Please contact our sales team at +1 404 442-4868 or email us at sales@pocketmaps.com for more information or to request a custom quote.

Can I customize the front or back covers?

Absolutely. The cover cards are fully customizable. We can even print multiple versions (VDP - Variable Data Printing) so that not all covers are the same. For example: Let's say you're handing out event maps and would like to advertise four different themes or sponsors across all your PocketMaps. We could divide up your order into four groups, each with its very own cover design. We offer a variety of cover options including having the covers attach to a bottle hanger/bottleneck. Make the cover part of a lanyard perfect for tradeshows and events. Apply a scratch-off area. Allow for a card/room-key or bus-pass to slide into the cover. Ask our sales team about the options we offer or better yet bring us your idea and let us build a solution for you. You can call us at + 1 404 442-4868 or email us at sales@pocketmaps.com.

Can you provide a proof before production?

We understand how vital it is to ensure that your artwork is perfect before sending it off to the printer. Here at PocketMaps, we offer multiple options for proofing so that every client has the confidence in knowing that their product is printing exactly how it should be.

Free Digital PDF Proof
We provide a free digital PDF soft-proof for every PocketMaps project. This proof will allow you to see a flattened version of your finalized artwork. With a digital PDF, you will see the basic layout of your project and an overall view of your design. This type of proof is the quickest option for projects that are on a tight deadline. With this free

option, you will be able to quickly view your proof online and confirm if it is ready for printing. It’s important to remember that digital PDF soft-proofs are not ideal for color matching, as printed colors may appear different from what you see on your screen.

Free Digital Video Proof
We provide video proof with every order of PocketMaps. For sensitive or confidential information, we can make your video proof password-protected. Just let us know when placing your order.

Laser Press Proof (6x3 Pocket-size or smaller)
$75.00 includes two sets of proofs and FedEx/UPS/DHL 2-day shipping.
Added three days to production.

A laser press proof is an actual hard copy proof of your project. If you are looking for printed proof that you can physically hold to review the size and layout of your project, a laser press proof would be helpful for you. A laser press-proof would also be a good proofing option if you use a 4-color process on your project and want to see how your colors print. However, the laser press proof does not accurately show PMS colors and is not printed on the same type of paper stock. Therefore the same coating finish (matte, gloss, etc.) will not show on a laser press proof.

Constructed Color Epson Inkjet Proof (Folded Dummy)
$185.00 includes two sets of proofs and FedEx 2 day shipping.
Added three days to production.

A constructed color Epson proof is similar to a laser press proof, and however, this type of printed proof is printed on both sides of the uncoated paper and then hand-folded to mimic the final project. Ordering a constructed color-Epson proof means that you can see how your project will fold together and how the assembled finished project will appear. Including this kind of proof in your order is an excellent option if you want to see a physical representation of how your design comes together as a whole and if any folds within your project affect your artwork.

Keep in mind that this process is much like the laser press proof as it is suitable for the 4-color process but does not accurately show PMS colors. The paper it is printed on is not the same type of stock that the final project will be printed on. Therefore, the coating finish will not show on the constructed color Epson inkjet proof.

Product Proof (Wet Proof)
The cost ranges from $475.00-$750.00 and includes two sets of printed proofs and FedEx 2 day shipping. Adds five days to production. A product proof (also known as a Wet Proof) is an actual physical sample of your completed project. We highly recommend this type of proof for substantial orders to ensure that every detail of your project is perfect before printing. A product proof will

show you exactly how your colors will print and how your artwork looks on the chosen paper stock and coating. The proof will also come folded and assembled so that you can have a clear vision of exactly how your completed work will look.

We ship using UPS, FedEx, DHL, USPS, RoyalMail & DPD, to name a few. Our shipping options range from shipping one single box all the way up to shipping full 40' ocean intermodal containers that go from a tractor-trailer to an ocean container ship, then to a trans and back to a tractor-trailer.

We do not add additional shipping rates – you simply pay what we pay. We can also use your shipping account if you prefer to be billed directly by the carrier.

Depending on your order size, we will ship your PocketMaps to you as a small package delivery (think FedEx, UPS, DHL) or on a pallet.
